The 1955 Château Cheval Blanc is a notable Right Bank Bordeaux from this esteemed Saint-Émilion estate. Château Cheval Blanc boasts a unique terroir of gravel, sand and clay soils across approximately 39 hectares. In this vintage, the estate’s blend prominently features Cabernet Franc and Merlot. The 1955 growing season provided consistent warmth and sunshine, fostering healthy, concentrated grapes. The wine typically reveals subtle red fruit notes, spice and earthy undertones, showcasing how Cheval Blanc has evolved over decades.

The 1955 Cheval Blanc was a reconditioned bottle acquired through Justerini & Brooks. It has an odd nose at first with candied red fruit, aniseed and Seville orange marmalade. The palate is medium-bodied and slightly viscous in style with brown spices, dark chocolate and kirsch. It fades a little towards the finish. You can tell there is a very good Saint-Émilion here but that the reconditioning perhaps is not all it could have been. Tasted at the mature Bordeaux dinner at Arbor restaurant in Hong Kong.

The Star of Saint-Émilion

With a history dating back as least as far as the 16th century, Château Cheval Blanc is considered by many to be one of the finest estates in Bordeaux. Located on the Right Bank in the celebrated Saint-Émilion appellation. One of only four wines to be ranked Premier Grand Cru Classé A in the classification of Saint-Émilion wine, the estate has three main soil types: clay, gravel and sand. Red grape plantings are made up of 60% Cabernet Franc and 40% Merlot and are used to produce wines with marvellous aromatics, with floral and smoky nuances, aged 100% in new oak.

In addition to the highly-coveted first wine, the estate produces a second red wine, Le Petit Cheval which made its first appearance in the 1988 vintage. A white wine, known as Le Petit Cheval Blanc, is also made, produced from predominantly Sauvignon Blanc together with a smaller percentage of Sémillon.
