The 1948 Château Cheval Blanc is a notable mature Right Bank Bordeaux from this esteemed estate in Saint-Émilion. This wine features a high percentage of Cabernet Franc, which contributes to its structure, complemented by Merlot. The year 1948 was characterised by dry conditions, resulting in a concentrated harvest with thick-skinned grapes. This vintage often reveals a complex mosaic of aromas, including dried fruit, earth and subtle herbaceous notes, while the palate presents a robust body and remarkable freshness, indicative of its long-term ageing potential.

The 1948 Cheval Blanc, when on form, can represent the apotheosis of 20th-century Bordeaux. This Avery's bottling doesn't rank close to the stellar example I drank several years ago. That said, after a muted beginning, it blossoms in the glass after ten minutes, delivering black cherry, licorice, white flower and loamy scents. There's real freshness here. The palate is more complex than the nose. The 1948 is beautifully balanced, although Avery's bottling lacks the show-stopping precision that the château-bottling has. Yet the finish does have a crystalline quality that gives you a glimpse of what this wine can be. Tasted at "Koala's" Bordeaux dinner in Hong Kong.Neal Martin25th March 2025

The Star of Saint-Émilion

With a history dating back as least as far as the 16th century, Château Cheval Blanc is considered by many to be one of the finest estates in Bordeaux. Located on the Right Bank in the celebrated Saint-Émilion appellation. One of only four wines to be ranked Premier Grand Cru Classé A in the classification of Saint-Émilion wine, the estate has three main soil types: clay, gravel and sand. Red grape plantings are made up of 60% Cabernet Franc and 40% Merlot and are used to produce wines with marvellous aromatics, with floral and smoky nuances, aged 100% in new oak.

In addition to the highly-coveted first wine, the estate produces a second red wine, Le Petit Cheval which made its first appearance in the 1988 vintage. A white wine, known as Le Petit Cheval Blanc, is also made, produced from predominantly Sauvignon Blanc together with a smaller percentage of Sémillon.
