The Domaine de Marcoux`s first vintage was in 1989 and the estate is owned by the Armeniers – a family with one of the oldest lineages in the Southern Rhône. They produce two red wines from Châteauneuf-du-Pape, including this Vieilles Vignes from 100% Grenache. The wine has exhilarating aromas of spices and red fruits. Creamy intensity and concentration, with ample acidity, bark and brown spice, and a twist of orange peel. Generous ripe tannins and great length.

Deep ruby. Explosive aromas of dark berries, kirsch, vibrant minerals, cured meat and garrigue; smells like a great Mazis-Chambertin. Finely etched red and black fruit flavors completely stain the palate, with gentle smokiness and candied flowers adding nuance. It's rare to encounter this level of elegance from the southern Rhone. The finish is sweet, smoky and strikingly pure, leaving strong mineral notes behind. As usual, one of the best wines of the vintage.Josh Raynolds1st January 2009
