The history of Domaine la Barroche extends all the way back to the 17th Century, but it was really only after the early 2000s that the estate came to prominence when Julien Barrot joined the family business. The 2017 release of the estate’s entry level cuvée, which was previously known as ‘Signature’, is a blend of 62% Grenache, 18% Mourvedre, 13% Syrah, 5% Cinsault and 2% other varieties from a variety of different parcels with an average age of more than 70 years. It is rich and fleshy, bursting with ripe red cherry and black raspberry fruit, enhanced by a dusting of spices and a subtle herbal streak.

Bright magenta. Heady, spice-accented boysenberry and cherry aromas are complicated by suave lavender and Asian spice nuances. Seamless, deep and appealingly sweet, offering intense, mineral-laced red and blue fruit liqueur, spicecake and floral pastille flavors underscored by a vein of juicy acidity. Finishes smooth and impressively long, displaying harmonious tannins and persistent florality.Josh Raynolds1st December 2019

Replacing the Signature bottling, winemaker Julien Barrot has now put his name on the estate's entry-level Châteauneuf du Pape. The 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape Julien Barrot is a fine effort, combining black cherries and red raspberries on the nose and backing the impressive fruit with ample weight, a plush, velvety texture and great purity and length on the finish. It should drink well for a decade or more.Joe Czerwinski30th August 2019
