Châteauneuf-du-Pape Reserve Vieille Julienne 2012 is a full-bodied blended red wine from the southern Rhône Valley that showcases the complexity of its esteemed appellation. The wine is crafted from Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and other permitted varieties, reflecting the unique terroir of the northern sector known as Le Grès. The domaine, managed by Jean-Paul Daumen since 1990, spans 32 hectares with an average vine age of 50 years. Vinification involves 100% destemming and separate fermentation for each variety, and ageing occurs in small oak barrels. No filtration is employed prior to bottling.

Vinous
Opaque ruby. Deeply pitched dark berry liqueur, cherry pit, licorice and woodsmoke scents pick up exotic Indian spice and floral pastille qualities with air. Juicy, broad and alluringly sweet on the palate, with vibrant blackberry and bitter cherry flavors lifted and sharpened by zesty acidity. Shows excellent depth and power, finishing sweet, smoky and very long. This wine checks in at 16% alcohol, for those who are counting.Josh Raynolds1st April 2015
