Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réserve Le Clos du Caillou 1998 is an intriguing expression from one of the Rhône Valley`s renowned producers, established in 1895. This vintage presents a profile reminiscent of a mature Bordeaux, showcasing complex notes of graphite, smoked meats and olive, alongside subtle hints of tobacco and dark fruits. Full-bodied with concentrated texture, it features building tannins while maintaining the estate`s signature elegance and purity. A blend primarily of Grenache and Mourvèdre, this wine is expected to evolve further, offering potential enjoyment for another six to eight years.

One of the top wines in the vintage today, the 1998 Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve le Clos du Caillou tastes more like a mature Bordeaux than a Chateauneuf du Pape. Giving up lots of graphite, smoked meats, olive, tobacco and dark fruits, this beauty is full-bodied, concentrated and textured, with building tannin, yet possesses the hallmark elegance and purity of the estate. The first vintage from this cuvee and coming from 60% Grenache and 40% Mourvedre, it will continue to drink beautifully through 2023+. - Jeb Dunnuck
