An estate with a formidable reputation for creating some of the world`s finest Chateauneuf-du-Pape.

Until his death in 1997, the winemaking was overseen by the famous Jacques Reynaud who favoured the use of low-yielding Grenache vines to create fantastically rich, luscious wines. Chateau Rayas is now ably managed by Jacques` son Francois.

The 1981 Château Rayas is one of the oldest that I have tasted and these days, not an easy wine to find. This bottle has a sublime, almost “melted” bouquet with bing cherry, peppermint, rose petal, peony and wild fennel. The menthol note becomes more conspicuous with continued aeration. The palate is still fresh, very well balanced with black truffle, wild fennel, white pepper and morels. It feels long and sensual in the mouth, perhaps not as sumptuous as I remember the 1986 a couple of years back, yet evoking Châteauneuf-du-Pape in all its glory. Tasted at Tour d’Argent restaurant in Paris. Neal Martin1st July 2018
