Châteauneuf-du-Pape Pignan Rayas 1995 is crafted from 100% Grenache, sourced from parcels adjacent to the renowned Rayas vineyard in the Southern Rhône. The wine is characterised by its 14% alcohol content, derived from an exceptional vintage that offered grapes with notable concentration and depth. The sandy soils and cooler microclimate of the vineyard contribute to its distinctiveness, while fermentation occurs in traditional old oak foudres. The bouquet reveals aromas of wild strawberries, white pepper, and dried roses, underpinned by a light, infusion-like texture. As it has aged, this wine showcases a nuanced complexity and an enduring, floral finish. Pignan is commonly regarded as more accessible than its sibling, Rayas, yet this 1995 vintage presents a unique balance of youthful approachability and evolved characteristics.

I have opened two bottles of 1995 Pignan. It is quite backward, seemingly austere, but perplexing. The color is a healthy dark-ruby. The closed nose eventually gives up jammy cherry notes, smoke, and earth. Medium-bodied, unevolved, tannic, and rather compressed, this Pignan needs 2-3 years of bottle age. My instincts suggest there is more to this wine than I have been able to discern from tasting it. Time will tell. Anticipated maturity. 2001-2010.
