Run by successive generations of the Avril family, Clos des Papes has a long and illustrious history of producing exceptional quality wine in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Though 90% of production is red, 10% is reserved for white wine, with the debut of the ‘Blanc’ arriving in 1955. The wine is typically made up of Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, Clairette, Bourboulenc and Picpoul, and is aged in stainless steel tanks. The 2005 vintage is now a mature white wine, complex and nutty, with notes of poached pears and beeswax.

A vintage that Avril is selling to restaurants as he thinks it's drinking beautifully (and I agree), the 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc has superb freshness and minerality in its honeyed, hazelnut, licorice and stone fruit-driven bouquet. Layered, pure and balanced, with both freshness and richness, it will continue to evolve nicely, but there's no need to hold off.Jeb Dunnuck14th September 2015
