Chapoutier Châteauneuf-du-Pape Barbe Rac 1998 is a full-bodied Grenache red wine from the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation of the southern Rhône Valley. M Chapoutier is one of the biggest and most-respected wine producers in the Rhône Valley, acting both as a producer and a négociant with activity across all of the major appellations. Barbe Rac is produced from a single plot of 90+ year-old Grenache vines and is matured for 16 months in concrete vats before release. "More concentrated and rich than the Croix de Bois, the 1998 Chateauneuf du Pape Barbe Rac offers a blockbuster bouquet of blackberries, kirsch, ground herbs, liquorice and scorched earth. Coming from the southwestern sector of the appellation and vines planted in 1901, this full-bodied, layered and sexy 1998 has enough fruit and depth to continue drinking nicely for another decade." Wine Advocate, 2015

Passion and Drive

One of the oldest producers in the Rhône Valley, M. Chapoutier was established in 1808. The arrival of a young Michel Chapoutier, who took over management of the family domaine in 1990, saw huge changes and a renewed drive for excellence, focussing especially on the diverse terroir of the Rhône. Michel has embraced biodynamic practices in recent years and attributes much of the increase in quality to this approach. The wines are generous and fruit-forward at the entry level, moving towards the sublime as we move up the quality ladder.

Two of the greatest wines in the portfolio are 'De L'Orée', an Hermitage Blanc made from 100% Marsanne and 'Le Pavillon', a full-bodied, expressive Hermitage rouge that effortlessly rubs shoulders with the world's greatest Syrah.
