The 2018 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Vergers from Philippe Colin is a highly regarded white Burgundy, made from 100% Chardonnay grapes from the stony, clay-limestone soils of the Les Vergers Premier Cru. The 2018 vintage was warm, yielding ripe and concentrated fruit with good balance. Colin`s traditional winemaking involves fermentation and aging in French oak barrels (around 25-30% new) for about 12 months, with malolactic fermentation. This wine is noted for its ample flesh, smooth texture, and notes of yellow plum, quince, citrus and florals, with underlying minerality and refreshing acidity, offering both immediate enjoyment and good ageing potential.

The 2018 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Vergers 1er Cru is lively on the nose with yellow plum, quince and rose petal aromas, all nicely defined. The palate is well-balanced with good depth. There is a bit of oak to subsume here, but there is freshness and balance with a fine tension on the finish. Maybe it just lacks the complexity of the best wines in this flight, but it should drink well for a decade or so. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 white tasting. Neal Martin22nd November 2022
