Bernard Moreau Chassagne-Montrachet La Maltroie 2014 is a Premier Cru Burgundy white wine from a centrally located vineyard that typically produces a more muscular and broad-shouldered style than Clos St Jean. In the 2014 vintage the wine maintained a sharp acid profile despite its natural density and weight on the palate. The flavour profile is centred on lemon zest and toasted nuts with a firm stony grip that persists through the finish.

Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting, Moreau`s 2014 Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru la Maltroie has a very sophisticated, mineral-driven bouquet with scents of yellow flower/persimmon evolving in the glass. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, and while there is some new oak to be subsumed, there is plenty of fruit stacked behind it to suggest this has the legs to run far. One to watch. This did not shine in barrel but seems to be coming good here.

(from 25-, 40- and 55-year-old parcels): Bright pale yellow. Very ripe, expressive aromas of peach, apricot and baked bread, plus a touch of honey. Round, ripe and silky, but with a light touch to its framing citrus and mineral flavors. An element of salinity accentuates the wine's dryness and firms the finish. A bit youthfully disjointed today.Stephen Tanzer1st September 2016

Edgy nose announces the ambition of this wine. Great spread of flavours already and some real splendour in terms of dimension. Many a grand cru lacks this sort of build (towards the finish). Really very exciting. (JR)
