Domaine Bernard Moreau Chassagne-Montrachet 2013 is a village Burgundy Chardonnay and represents one of the finest examples of the terroir of the appellation. Guided by organic farming in the vineyard and low-intervention principles in the cellar, Alex Moreau crafts barrel-aged Chardonnay`s of real distinction. Typically, the domaine`s wines are aged in French oak barrels (10%-50% new) for 12 to 20 months depending on the vineyard and vintage. This historic domaine was founded in 1809 by Auguste Moreau but it wasn`t until 1977 that its reputation was cemented under the leadership of Bernard Moreau (who, improbably, assumed that role at the tender age of 14). Bernard`s sons, Alex and Benoît, came onboard in the 1990s, and Alex is now in charge of winemaking and vineyard operations. "Pure, fresh citrus and pear fruit. Nice chewy texture and succulently fresh finish. Lovely purity and persistence." Julia Harding MW, 2015

(20% new oak; made from multiple parcels, combined in the press, with two-thirds of the fruit coming from the Puligny side of the appellation): Slightly high-toned aromas of peach and spicy oak. Intense peach fruit shows good intensity and sweetness, with nicely ripe acidity for the year. Finishes firm and persistent, with a slight phenolic edge. The crop level was normal here, in the range of 50 to 55 hectoliters per hectare, according to Moreau, who told me he likes the notion of an assemblage as he believes it gives an accurate impression of a village.Stephen Tanzer1st September 2015
