Domaine de la Vougeraie was founded in 1999 by the inimitable Jean-Claude Basset. With holdings in some of the most prestigious appellations of Burgundy, viticulture and winemaking is meticulous and is both organic and biodynamic. The 2017 Charmes-Chambertin Les Mazoyeres was produced from a 0.74ha parcel of vines planted in 1902 and spent 16 months in French oak, of which 36% was new. This is now a domaine achieving remarkable levels of consistency and quality, and this is yet another excellent release that should develop beautifully in bottle.

The 2017 Mazoyeres-Chambertin Grand Cru has an open-knit, slightly bretty nose, earthy but not really coalescing in the glass. The palate is also quite funky and lacks freshness, the stems overtaking the freshness and fruité on the finish. Is this correct? It’s a little vexing. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.Neal Martin1st January 2022

Located between the Côte de Nuits and the Côte de Beaune in Prémeaux, Domaine de la Vougeraie was founded by Jean-Claude Boisset in 1999. The name was inspired by domaine’s significant vineyard holdings in the village of Vougeot, which is also Boisset’s home.

One of Burgundy’s leading domaines, Vougeraie owns about 40ha of vineyard in more than 30 different appellations of Burgundy, including the Grands Crus of Clos Vougeot, Musigny, Bonnes-Mares, Charmes Chambertin, Mazoyères, Corton Clos du Roi and Corton Charlemagne. The domaine vineyards have been managed biodynamically since 2001. The highest possible production values and strictest levels of quality control, including a state-of-the-art sorting table, are maintained for the domaine’s entire range of wines. The domaine’s general manager, Sylvie Poillot, has managed the winemaking team since Pierre Vincent departed for Domaine Leflaive.
