The Roty family has been engaged in winemaking in Gevrey-Chambertin since the year 1710. Their collection of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines, sourced from their 12 hectares of vineyards, is widely regarded as among the finest produced in the Côte d`Or. Joseph Roty, a legendary figure in the region, passed away in 2008. He was renowned not only for the exceptional quality of his wines but also for his reputation as a figure who preferred not to engage with journalists and divulge details of their winemaking techniques. This particular release comes from the Grand Cru Charmes-Chambertin where the family owns a tiny 0.16-hectare plot. The 1990 vintage across Burgundy, especially in the Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits, is noteworthy for its exceptional quality.

The 1990 Charmes-Chambertin Très Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru was one of the standouts from Stephen Tanzer's vertical tasting, so I was intrigued to taste it myself. It’s dark in color, with the same medicinal bouquet featuring a surfeit of dark berry fruit, white pepper, cola and mocha, the licorice element becoming more apparent with time. The palate is dense and rich, displaying massive grip and density and a sinewy, almost primal finish. This is a wine that demands your attention, unashamedly ostentatious and flamboyant. You know, I get why some might be attracted to this 1990, though for me it’s just a little too keen to impress.
