The 2002 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru comes from a period when I feel that Dugat had a tendency to slightly over-extract their wine. Deep in colour, it has a dense, smudged bouquet, a mélange of red and black fruits, becoming almost pastille-like with aeration. There is a light oyster shell scent that becomes apparent, though it always remains quite glossy. The palate is well structured and, like the nose, feels quite dense and sinewy. There is a sense of “mass” to this Charmes-Chambertin that delivers an attractive redcurrant and cranberry, almost confit-like on the finish. In summary, this is a wine that I admire rather than enjoy. Tasted at the Gevrey-Chambertin lunch at China Tang in Hong Kong. Neal Martin1st May 2019
