The 2005 Charmes-Chambertin Aux Mazoyères Christophe Roumier is a red Burgundy Grand Cru wine from the Mazoyères-Chambertin lieu-dit, bottled under the Charmes-Chambertin appellation,. The 2005 vintage in Burgundy was exceptional, giving wines of immense concentration, power and longevity. This Grand Cru is massively structured, showcasing deep layers of dark fruit, spice and earth, requiring some years to fully resolve its formidable tannic grip.

Roumier’s 2005 Charmes-Chambertin offers tart black cherry and raw meat with bay leaf and resin accents on the nose. Deep meatiness and dark berries dipped in bitter chocolate follow onto the palate, which evidences abundant but relatively fine tannins. The finish is something of a low-toned rumbling that may grow as the wine puts on 5-7 years of bottle age. This will be bottled under “Domaine Christophe Roumier.” One senses that Christophe Roumier considers 2005 a high point of his career, and my visit with him was among the high points of my recent trip. He describes this as “a classic vintage lending itself to very calm, classic vinification,” which given the opportunities afforded by perfectly healthy, firm, dry, ripe fruit involved triage almost solely to remove ladybugs, and included around 25% whole clusters in the fermenters at the Premier Cru level and 50% at that of Grand Cru. - David Schildknecht
