Chapelle d’Ausone, the second wine of the prestigious St-Émilion Premier Grand Cru Classé Château Ausone, is crafted with the same care and attention as the Grand Vin, using fruit from younger vines. The 2020 vintage is made up of 60% Cabernet Franc, 35% Merlot, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. It offers aromas of ripe black fruits such as plum and blackcurrant, alongside subtle floral and earthy notes. On the palate, the wine is elegant and well-balanced, with smooth tannins and a refreshing acidity. The finish is long and refined, demonstrating the exceptional quality and ageing potential of this remarkable second wine.

The 2020 Chapelle d'Ausone has ample toasty oak on the nose, which continues to shade the black fruit underneath. Yet it coheres in the glass, finally allowing the terroir to shine through. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins and a fine bead of acidity. It's very harmonious, with a precise and persistent finish. There's wonderful mineralité and tension here—superb. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.Neal Martin12th November 2024

Chateau Ausone

An Historic Saint-Émilion Estate

Named after the Roman poet Ausonius, who kept around 100 acres of vineyards in and around the area, Château Ausone is one of only four wines to be ranked Premier Grand Cru Classé A in the classification of Saint-Émilion wine. The winery is located on the Right Bank, close to the actual town of Saint-Émilion in Bordeaux. The smallest of the First Growths - with only seven hecatres of vines - 10% of which goes into producing the second wine, La Chapelle d'Ausone.

With its characteristic fresh limestone soils, Château Ausone produces wonderfully mineral red wines, all farmed organically. The key grape varieties are Cabernet Franc and Merlot, with smaller percentages of Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot also planted.
