Ghislaine Barthod Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras is a Premier Cru red Burgundy from the Côte de Nuits. This 2005 magnum showcases the longevity of one of the village`s most structurally impressive sites during a near-perfect growing season. The stony soils of Les Cras demand patience, and the larger bottle format has preserved the primary fruit aromatics over two decades. Barthod’s winemaking here emphasises the tension between ripe black-cherry fruit and the underlying limestone grip. It remains a powerful, broad-shouldered expression of Chambolle that is only now beginning to show its full complexity.

The 2005 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras 1er Cru is drinking well at the moment. It has that forcefulness that many 2005s possess, a sense of presence and power as if it doesn't want to be ignored. It offers copious red fruit, briar and touches of leather, which is very Chambolle in terms of its exuberance. The palate is more refined with grippy tannins. Again, it is pretty powerful, and you might argue that it lacks a bit of refinement. But there is purity of fruit and impressive length, and my glass was soon finished. Neal Martin25th June 2024
