Ghislaine Barthod Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras is a Premier Cru red Burgundy from the Côte de Nuits. The vineyard name refers to the craggy, stony nature of the soil, which sits on the same hillside as Les Amoureuses but at a higher elevation. In the warm 2019 vintage, the cooling influence of the altitude was vital for maintaining freshness. Barthod opted for traditional fermentation to produce a wine with significant ageing potential and firm, architectural tannins. The resulting wine combines the richness of sun-drenched fruit with a sharp, flinty finish.

The 2019 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras 1er Cru has a very pure bouquet of maraschino cherries, blueberry, white pepper and subtle undergrowth aromas. This is quintessential Chambolle—more succinct than Camille Giroud’s Les Borniques. The palate is medium-bodied and succulent, but it doesn't quite deliver the panache that is exhibited aromatically. High-toned and a little honeyed in texture, it requires a bit more tension on the structured finish. I suspect it will improve with bottle age, though there are better Chambolle Premier Crus this vintage. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.Neal Martin12th December 2023

Cask sample. A little darker than the Chatelots. Vibrant crimson. More savoury and spiced on the nose but still with gorgeous Chambolle scent. And that dark floral aspect which is peony and not rose. Even a light touch of violets. Chewy but rounded, more obviously oaky but made sweet on the palate by the lovely fruit. Intense and long, with a long way to go and yet more approachable in this vintage than is typical for her wines. Finely dry finish. (JH)
