Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes Domaine Ponsot 2005 is a Premier Cru red Burgundy from the commune of Chambolle-Musigny. Sourced from a parcel located just below the prestigious Le Musigny, this wine originates from vines averaging 50 years in age, contributing to its complexity. The 2005 vintage presents a combination of ripe fruit expression and firm tannic structure. The bouquet features notes of dark cherry, sweet spice and earthy undertones, reflecting the rich essence of its terroir. This wine exemplifies the power and longevity characteristic of the 2005 vintage, now entering a graceful phase of maturation.

A 2005 Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes smells of bitter chocolate-covered black cherries and pralines, fills the mouth with ripe rich fruit but also with salty, stony minerality, engenders a sense of doughy richness and substantiality, and finishes with long, consistent black cherry, toasted nuts, chocolate and chalk. This is not a Charmes of particular elegance, much less delicacy, but neither does so much fatness and sweetness of fruit become heavy or tiring. - David Schildknecht

Good full red. Sappy black cherry and chocolate aromas lifted by a mineral component. Superripe, sweet and fat with chocolatey, palate-caressing fruit. Conveys an impression of soft acidity, but for all its thickness this retains good freshness.Stephen Tanzer1st March 2007

Burgundian Pioneers

An estate that looms large in the mythology of Burgundy. Domaine Ponsot were early adopters of the practice of estate-bottling in the 1930s and also pioneered research into clonal selection - a key aspect of modern viticulture. Up until 2017, the domaine was under the stewardship of Laurent Ponsot, who did much to promote his family's wines. Laurent took what he saw as the best of organic and biodynamic practices without ever pursuing formal certification. On paper, the approach in the winery seems almost spartan - no sorting table at the cellar, fermentation is proceeds according to the whims of the native yeasts, absolutely no new wood is used during maturation and bottling takes place in line with a particular lunar phase.

While this approach might seem esoteric, the high quality of the wines and the praise they receive is universal. The Grand Cru wines are some of the finest in the Côte d'Or - concentrated, powerful and intense, all made with fruit from 50+ year vines. While Laurent may have moved on, his sister Rose-Marie has continued to maintain quality as sole proprietor of Domaine Ponsot.
