A revered Côte de Nuits appellation, ‘Les Amoureuses’ is certainly the most famous of all Chambolle-Musigny’s premier cru sites. Like most of the Chambolle area, the vineyard is characterized by a slightly greater amount of limestone than clay compared to Burgundy’s typical clay-calcareous mix. Many top-end producers have holdings here including Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier, with a small 0.5- hectare parcel. This is their 1999 release, brimming with notes of red fruit compote, mushrooms, truffle and spices.

The 1999 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses 1er Cru had a deeper hue than other vintages. Blackberries, Earl Grey, almost pastille-like, one has to step back and admire the precision of this wine. The aromatics are more powerful than the 2002. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, good density and very pure but with a little chewiness towards the finish. An Amoureuses with muscle even after 24 years. One of Mugnier's bolder wines. Tasted at the Les Amoureuses vertical at Hide restaurant. Neal Martin1st May 2023

Precision and Beauty

Located the famous Château de Chambolle-Musigny, which has been owned by the Mugniers since the mid 19th century, Frédéric Mugnier took the hem at the family winery in 1985. Frédéric farms around 35 acres of vines, including plantings in some of Burgundy's most desirable crus, most notably the famous Les Amoureuses Premier Cru and Musigny Grand Cru. A notable recent addition to the portfolio is Clos de la Maréchale in Nuits-St-George, returned to the family stable after a 54 lease to Domaine Faiveley.

The winemaking is methodical and reasoned, reflecting Frédéric's training as an engineer - all fruit is destemmed before crushing, new oak is limited to 25% and all wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered. Bucking the trend somewhat, Frédéric has decided not to pursue organic or biodynamic certification. While pesticide and herbicide-free since the mid-1990s, the domaine take a pragmatic approach to vineyard management rather than a dogmatic one.
