Created through the marriage of Jacques Rossignol of Volnay and Mado Trapet from a distinguished Gevrey-Chambertin family, Domaine Rossignol-Trapet has come to be recognised as one of the finest producers in the Côte de Nuits. Having experimented in the mid-90s, Nicolas and David Rossignol have gradually converted the whole domaine to organic and biodynamic farming methods.

From the excellent 2018 vintage, this is a spectacular release of the highly revered Chambertin Grand Cru. Weighty yet still seemingly light on its feet, there is a huge amount of fruit concentration derived from the old vines used in this cuvée but such an intrinsic sense of balance and harmony. A special wine deserving of a place in any self-respecting Burgundy lover.

The 2018 Chambertin Grand Cru is initially understated on the nose, unfolding with brambly red fruit, undergrowth and just a light touch of morels. Very succinct with a kind of broody intensity - but maybe a touch of Brettanomyces? The palate is well balanced with a note of sour cherry and wild strawberry on the entry. Fine precision, moderate depth, though it is not the most profound Chambertin this year. Lovely edginess on the elegant finish, give this 4-5 years in bottle. Excellent. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.Neal Martin22nd November 2022
