Since inception in 2007, micro-négociant Olivier Bernstein has rapidly established himself as one of the newer stars of Burgundy with an impeccable range of reds from seven Grands and three Premiers Crus of the Côte de Nuits. The majority of vines that he uses are old, varying in age between 40 and 80+ years.

Bernstein’s Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru comes from vines that 60 years old on the upper portion of the east-facing slope. As is typical for his wines, this is rich yet supremely elegant, with wonderful definition and purity of fruit. Once the sumptuous waves of red and black cherry subside, more subtle mineral, herbal and earthy nuances begin to emerge, offering yet further complexity and depth.

Vinous
Dark red-ruby. Knockout nose combines raspberry, cherry, game and saline underbrush, plus a whiff of torrefaction. At once fully ripe and delicate; in a distinctly more feminine style than the Mazis. The plush, rich yet elegant flavors of medicinal dark fruits, spices and exotic flowers are complicated by salty minerality. Less sweet in the early going than the Mazis, finishing precise, classic and extremely long, with serious but fully buffered tannins that melt into the palate.Stephen Tanzer1st January 2018
