Chambertin-Clos de Bèze 2012 from Joseph Drouhin is an elegant and highly aromatic Grand Cru produced from fruit sourced from the northern end of Gevrey-Chambertin. Drouhin’s winemaking focuses on finesse, utilising gentle extraction and a moderate use of new oak to allow the site’s natural florality to emerge. The 2012 vintage, though small in quantity, yielded fruit of exceptional concentration and balance. This wine exhibits notes of red currants, sandalwood and peonies, with a palate that is surprisingly lithe and energetic. The tannins are fine-grained and silky, leading into a finish marked by a refined mineral tension and lingering spice.

The 2012 Chambertin Clos-de-Beze Grand Cru was completely de-stemmed. It has a light bouquet with mulberry and wild raspberry scents that are a little loose-knit considering the vineyard. The palate is medium-bodied with a soft supple opening. It is fleshy and voluminous in the mouth, although here I am seeking a little more backbone on the finish. Would that have been given by some stem addition? This Clos-de-Beze is sensual, but it is not as intellectual as I expected and will be earlier drinking than examples from other growers. - Neal Martin

(bottled at the end of October; includes some purchased grapes; vinified with 10% whole clusters): Bright, full red. Restrained nose hints at red fruits and smoky underbrush. Then sweet, silky and dense on the palate, showing considerable power as well as some spicy high tones. Saline, serious wine with an obvious sweet oak component and very good sneaky length. This wine spent 26 days on its skins. A bit shocked by the recent bottling, so my score should be viewed as provisional.Stephen Tanzer1st January 2014
