Chambertin-Clos-de-Bèze is a prestigious grand cru vineyard at the northern end of the Côte d`Or. This Clos is one of the oldest in Burgundy, having been created by the Abbey of Bèze in the 7th century. Some high-profile producers own parcels here, including Louis Jadot, Drouhin Laroze, Armand Rousseau and Domaine Faiveley, which has vines planted in 1966. The wines are typically complex on the nose offering a combination of fruit, spice and floral notes. The lively palate displays exceptional tension, elegant tannins, a hint of white pepper and menthol.

We start with Faiveley’s 1999 Chambertin Clos de Bèze. Deeply colored and intense, the 1999 is promising at the outset. I expect the searing, powerful tannins to soften with air, but instead the opposite happens as the wine continues to clamp down. Even within the context of the world’s most tannic, structured wines, the 1999 Bèze is austere, tight and totally unyielding, all qualities that become more prominent with the passing of time. In short, there is no pleasure to be found here.Antonio Galloni1st September 2014
