For four generations, the Rousseau family has worked tirelessly and passionately on some of the finest terroirs of the Côte de Nuits. The Clos de Bèze in Gevrey-Chambertin originally belonged to the monks of the Bèze Abbey, who were given the land by the then Duke of Lower Burgundy in the year 630. They cleared the land and planted the first vines of what was to become the Clos de Bèze appellation. Revealing all the elegance and finesse of the Gevrey-Chambertin appellation, the wine is complex with deep colour and a long, smooth finish. The rich aromas are dominated by red berries and oriental spices. Here is the 2013 vintage in luxurious magnum format.

Good dark red. More closed today than the Clos Saint-Jacques, showing a stronger oak presence to its reticent aromas of dark raspberry, strawberry and blood orange. Then hugely rich, opulent and pliant on the palate if still youthfully reserved. Completely different in shape from the Clos Saint-Jacques, conveying a strong impression of solidity and saline minerality. Finishes with big but ripe, thoroughly integrated tannins. This may not have quite the fruit intensity or verve of the 2014 but it still leaves the salivary glands humming.Stephen Tanzer1st March 2016
