Domaine Armand Rousseau Chambertin-Clos de Bèze 2021 is a Grand Cru Pinot Noir from a cool and classic vintage that required meticulous work in the vineyard. The 2021 release marks a return to a more traditional Burgundian profile, featuring lower alcohol levels and a high-toned aromatic lift. The fruit is bright and crystalline, showing notes of pomegranate, cranberry and wild flowers, underscored by a sharp mineral precision. The palate is leaner and more linear than the preceding solar vintages, yet it possesses a density and persistence that are hallmarks of the Rousseau estate.

The 2021 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru is very perfumed and floral on the nose, with scents of Morello cherries, strawberry pastilles and orange pith. There is just a very minor reduction. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins. Very well balanced and quite tensile with a chalky edge, the finish is finely tuned with a touch of spice that lingers in the mouth. This actually meliorates in the glass and I suspect it would have continued its upward trajectory if it had had more time in my glass. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting. The most dramatic wine in the cellar is the 2021 Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru, a full-bodied, fleshy, enveloping wine that bursts with aromas of sweet cherries, dark berry fruit and plums mingled with notions of licorice, spices and smoked duck. Deep and layered, it concludes with a broad, expansive finish.William Kelley31st January 2023
