Coming from a renowned Chablis lineage, Samuel Billaud embarked on an independent journey in 2009, establishing his eponymous Domaine. Previously the winemaker at Domaine Billaud-Simon, a respected producer synonymous with classic Chablis excellence, Samuel has achieved remarkable acclaim since launching his own label. The Séchet Vieilles Vignes Premier Cru comes from a 0.6-hectare plot of 80-year-old vines and spends 18 months on the fine lees. Following the frost challenges of 2021, the arrival of the warm and sun-kissed 2022 vintage brought relief to Chablis` winemakers, who were pleased with a bountiful harvest of exceptional quality.

The 2022 Chablis Les Séchets Vieilles Vignes 1er Cru has an algae-tinged nose, touches of seaweed infusing the malic fruit. The palate is well balanced with a tangy opening, quite spicy and peppery in style, perhaps missing a little nuance, but there is plenty of flavour packed into this Vaillons. Why not drink now? It gets better in the glass and manifests more stoniness/flintiness right on the finish, pushing me to up my score. Bottled under Diam 30. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting. Tank sample. No oak here, 18 months on lees in tank.
Stone dust to the fore, herbal, but broader on the palate than I expected. I can see why this is better without oak. But there is still all that freshness and purity. Long, deeply textured, very salty finish. Wait for this. (JH) Julia Harding12th July 2023
