Founded in 1948, Domaine Raveneau is arguably the finest producer of Chablis and is renowned for making incredibly complex wines from some of the greatest Premiers and Grand Crus vineyards in the region. Average production is often only around 3,000 cases and winemaking is both meticulous and traditional, with all grapes harvested by hand, fermentation in stainless steel and then maturation on lees in 7-8-year-old large oak feuillettes.

The 2016 Premier Cru Montée de Tonnerre wafts invitingly from the glass with notes of citrus, orchard fruits, fennel and iodine. It is full-bodied, textural and round, with decent mid-palate concentration, bright acidity and excellent mineral tension.

The 2016 Chablis Montée de Tonnerre 1er Cru encapsulates everything you want in a Chablis, though the facet that I really admire is its uncompromising nature. The nose evokes images of a pond shaded by trees, not so much marine, something more…freshwater. The palate is powerful with impressive depth, displaying real intensity and drive through the weighty Conference pear and lanolin finish. This vineyard is one of the domaine’s strongest. I absolutely adored the 2016. Neal Martin12th June 2025
