`Domaine Francois Raveneau Chablis Montée de Tonnerre 2011 is a Premier Cru Chablis from the lieu-dit of Montée de Tonnerre on the north bank of the Serein river. Raveneau is widely regarded as the finest producer in the Chablis region and Montée de Tonnerre is one of the iconic vineyards of Chablis . Set back slightly from the region’s Grands Crus, Montée de Tonnerre`s moderate west-exposed slopes are protected from the east winds. This, combined with its base of shallow Kimmeridgian soil, intersected with veins of blue clay – a strikingly similar soil composition to that of its neighbouring Grands Crus – produces Chardonnay wines with the perfect combination of body, fruit and lively minerality.

The 2011 Chablis Montee de Tonnerre is all about grace. A gentle hint of spice leads to dried pears, crushed flowers, red berries and licorice. Constantly changing in the glass, the 2011 is a marvel to behold. Suggestions of smoke, graphite and licorice add layers of nuance in a magical wine loaded with class and personality. Best of all, the 2011 is relatively approachable by Raveneau standards, which means reader won't have to wait long at all to experience the magic of one of the great sites in Chablis.Antonio Galloni1st August 2013

Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The 2011 Chablis Montée de Tonnerre 1er Cru is very austere and reticent on the nose at first, much like their Chapelot, but it opens nicely with subtle marine influences combining with the tertiary, hay bale scents. The palate is well balanced with crisp acidity, touches of lemon and almond, a subtle use of oak just rounding out the finish but this is very harmonious and refined, a real crowd-pleaser.Neal Martin30th November 2014
