Montée de Tonnerre is a Premier Cru on the north bank of the Serein river. Raveneau is widely regarded as the finest producer in the Chablis region and this mature 1er Cru from the 2002 vintage is now in prime drinking condition. Montée de Tonnerre is one of the iconic vineyards of Chablis . Set back slightly from the region’s Grands Crus, its moderate west-exposed slopes are protected from the east winds. This, combined with its base of shallow Kimmeridgian soil, intersected with veins of blue clay – a strikingly similar soil composition to that of its neighbouring Grands Crus – produces Chardonnay wines with the perfect combination of body, fruit and lively minerality.
“Slate, chalk, and ripe pears can be discerned in the aromatic profile of the 2002 Chablis Montee de Tonnerre. Fleshy, supple and packed with creamed nuts, candied citrus fruits, and flint, this is a medium-bodied wine with outstanding depth as well as a sensual, velvety texture.”
“2002 was the kind of vintage we’d love to see every year, it has excellent balance and loads of flesh,” said Bernard Raveneau. Harvest for the Raveneaus began the last week of September, and the grapes were “healthy, with between 4 and 4.5 grams of acidity (per liter), and ripe, there was no need to chaptalize.” 91points, Pierre Rovani for The Wine Advocate.

Healthy bright yellow. Classic brothy, crushed-stone Chablis nose, with lively hints of ripe citrus fruits and flowers. Wonderfully dense and tactile yet weightless, showing a sexy creaminess in the mid-palate for such a mineral-driven wine. An element of candied yellow fruits emerged with air, with a repeating floral note providing lift. Beautifully balanced, vibrant and long, finishing tactile and classically dry but not at all austere. A bit like the 2010 in style.Stephen Tanzer1st August 2019
