Chablis Les Blanchots Vieille Vigne 2002 from Domaine Billaud-Simon is a Grand Cru of exceptional pedigree, sourced from old vines on a steep, southeast-facing slope. The Blanchots vineyard is unique for its high proportion of white clay, which produces a more floral and delicate style of Chablis compared with its neighbours. The 2002 vintage is legendary in Burgundy for its perfect balance of ripeness and crystalline acidity, widely considered one of the best years for long-term cellaring. This wine offers a complex bouquet of white flowers, crushed shells and citrus oil, with a palate that is both voluminous and piercingly fresh. After two decades, it has developed beautiful tertiary notes of toasted nuts and honey while maintaining its core mineral drive.

(done entirely in older barriques Peach, apricot, flowers and nutty, spicy oak on the nose. Complex white peach and mineral flavors are framed by bright acidity (4.3 grams per liter). This boasts grand cru fullness in the mouth but also excellent definition and cut. Finishes very subtle and long, with fruit and minerals outlasting wood on the end. A lovely subtle wine whose structure derives as much from its minerality as from its acidity. Another oak wine that works!Stephen Tanzer1st July 2004
