Château Certan de May is a perfectly situated 5.5-hectare property in Pomerol, lying directly opposite Vieux Château Certan and close to some illustrious neighbours, such as Pétrus and Le Pin. The château’s latest release is the celebrated 2019 vintage, which consists of 65% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine reveals notes of black cherries, black currants, tobacco and black pepper, leading to a long, mineral finish. It is approachable now but will definitely benefit from a few more years in the cellar.

An under the radar insiders' Pomerol that is subdued but clearly holding a lot back. Give it time and you find layers of earthy, focused and finessed blackcurrant and bilberry fruits. Balanced, well placed, gets increasingly creamy and succulent as it opens in the mouth, showing its complexity and promise. Harvest September 17 to October 4. The 2019 Certan de May is a curious Pomerol. As I mentioned in my note from barrel, it has an open-knit nose of red berry fruit, touches of black tea, white pepper and damp earth. The palate is cohesive on the entry with light tannins, and a little more angular than its peers (especially juxtaposed against the Hosanna). It seems to be a little pinched and lacks the peacock’s tail that defines many 2019 Pomerols. It just leaves me wanting more. Neal Martin1st February 2022

65% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Barrel sample.Deep crimson hue. Enticing nose of ripe, dark fruit with a definite cassis tone. Sweet (perhaps oak-nuanced) attack then lots of gushing fruit. Round and gourmand but plentiful tannins behind. Saline finish again. Lots going on. (JL)

Chateau Certan de May

First Class Pomerol

Situated on the prized central plateau of Pomerol, Château Certan de May is situated adjacent to two other world famous Right Bank properties - Vieux Château Certan and La Fleur-Pétrus. The vineyards are characterised by the mix of clay and gravel typical of the commune and the winemaking has a focus on concentration and power. Michel Rolland was consulting in the cellar until 2012 when Jean-Claude Berrouet took over.

The vineyard is planted with 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon with vines averaging around 50 years of age. Wines are fermented for between four and six weeks before around 18 months ageing in oak barrels, around 40% of which are new.
