Situated on Pomerol’s prized plateau neighbouring Vieux Château Certain and La Fleur-Pétrus, Certain de May is another of the exceptional Moueix stable. The 2015 is a beautifully classic Bordeaux with aromas of blackberry, raspberry and tobacco. The palate is linear and focussed with lovely overall balance.

The 2014 Certan de May has a dusky, animally nose with scents of dried blood and hung game developing with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with firm, grainy tannin, notes of pencil lead infusing the black fruit with just a touch of bitterness on the finish. It feels a little gawky at the moment although I think it might come together. Fingers crossed though I am not optimistic. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting. Neal Martin1st March 2018

Tasted blind. Rich, sweet, opulent but not one of the freshest. Slightly hot finish. Second bottle was more appealing. Clean. But not a standout. (JR)Jancis Robinson7th February 2018

Chateau Certan de May

First Class Pomerol

Situated on the prized central plateau of Pomerol, Château Certan de May is situated adjacent to two other world famous Right Bank properties - Vieux Château Certan and La Fleur-Pétrus. The vineyards are characterised by the mix of clay and gravel typical of the commune and the winemaking has a focus on concentration and power. Michel Rolland was consulting in the cellar until 2012 when Jean-Claude Berrouet took over.

The vineyard is planted with 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon with vines averaging around 50 years of age. Wines are fermented for between four and six weeks before around 18 months ageing in oak barrels, around 40% of which are new.
