Certan de May 2012 is a full-bodied, Merlot-based red wine from the Pomerol appellation of Bordeaux. Situated on the Pomerol plateau, between Vieux-Chateaux Certan and Pétrus, Château Certan de May is a 5-hectare property currently managed by legendary winemaker Jean-Luc Barreau. The vineyard is planted to Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, which grow on a combination of clay and gravel soils. On the 1995 vintage. "This has lovely singed vanilla, black tea and sandalwood aromas mingling together, with subtle plum sauce, steeped cherry and red currant fruit hanging in reserve. Graceful and perfumy overall, but with solid latent depth on the finish. Should expand a bit more during the élevage." Wine Spectator, 2013

The 2012 Certan de May is medium to deep garnet colored. The nose opens with notes of Morello cherries, dried mulberries, and fruitcake, giving way to powdered cinnamon and dusty earth. The medium-bodied palate is soft and elegantly styled, with mature red and black fruits and a fragrant earth finish. Nice, but drink up!Lisa Perrotti-Brown16th February 2023

The 2012 Certan de May offers fleshy red fruit on the nose intermingled with black truffle, leather and tobacco aromas. It needs a little more vigour. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, more expressive than the aromatics with a dab of white pepper. The finish shows admirable finesse, and I would broach this now. Tasted blind at the Southwold Ten-Year On tasting. Neal Martin27th September 2022

Michel Rolland was consulting in the cellar until 2012 when Jean-Claude Berrouet took over.

The vineyard is planted with 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon with vines averaging around 50 years of age. Wines are fermented for between four and six weeks before around 18 months ageing in oak barrels, around 40% of which are new.
