Situated on the Pomerol plateau, between Vieux-Chateaux Certan and Pétrus, Château Certan de May is a 5-hectare property currently managed by legendary winemaker Jean-Luc Barreau. The vineyard is planted to Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, which grow on a combination of clay and gravel soils. “Beautiful dense nose with polished dark fruit, leather and wet forest floor. Coffee, sweet tobacco, and Seville orange. Full-bodied and intense on the palate with polished tannins and deep layered texture. 95 points, James Suckling, February 2013”

The 2010 Certan de May has a slightly disjointed bouquet compared to the 2010 Clos l’Eglise, broodier and more introspective, but eventually reveals attractive truffle and morel aromas, hints of warm gravel or red bricks. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity, taut and crisp with a slightly attenuation towards the finish. But there is wonderful tension and sense of energy. This is a cru that disappointed when I last tasted it in 2014. This is a completely different wine! Tasted blind at Farr Vintners 10-Year On Bordeaux horizontal. Neal Martin1st April 2020

First Class Pomerol

Situated on the prized central plateau of Pomerol, Château Certan de May is situated adjacent to two other world famous Right Bank properties - Vieux Château Certan and La Fleur-Pétrus. The vineyards are characterised by the mix of clay and gravel typical of the commune and the winemaking has a focus on concentration and power. Michel Rolland was consulting in the cellar until 2012 when Jean-Claude Berrouet took over.

The vineyard is planted with 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon with vines averaging around 50 years of age. Wines are fermented for between four and six weeks before around 18 months ageing in oak barrels, around 40% of which are new.
