Certan de May 1996 reflects the classic character of Pomerol, composed primarily of Merlot with Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Situated on the prestigious Pomerol plateau between Vieux Château Certan and Pétrus, the estate benefits from gravel and clay soils that shape the wine’s refined structure. The 1996 has aromas of black fruit, tobacco, and pepper lead into earthy undertones, while soft, silky tannins carry through to a lingering finish, showcasing the ageing potential of the appellation.
86 Vinous
Moderately saturated medium red. Somewhat riper aromas of black raspberry, black cherry, smoke, tar, tobacco and pepper, plus a hint of green coffee beans. More intensely flavored and vinous than the '97; in a rather fruity style but a wine of modest sweetness. Finishes with tongue-dusting tannins and more length than the '97, but still betrays a slight greenness.

First Class Pomerol

Situated on the prized central plateau of Pomerol, Château Certan de May is situated adjacent to two other world famous Right Bank properties - Vieux Château Certan and La Fleur-Pétrus. The vineyards are characterised by the mix of clay and gravel typical of the commune and the winemaking has a focus on concentration and power. Michel Rolland was consulting in the cellar until 2012 when Jean-Claude Berrouet took over.

The vineyard is planted with 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon with vines averaging around 50 years of age. Wines are fermented for between four and six weeks before around 18 months ageing in oak barrels, around 40% of which are new.
