Cayuse En Cerise Vineyard Syrah 2017 is a single-vineyard wine from the Walla Walla Valley AVA in Washington State, crafted by Christophe Baron, who is noted for his pioneering efforts in the Rocks District of Milton-Freewater. This Syrah reflects the unique terroir of the En Cerise vineyard, characterised by its shallow, cobblestone-rich soils. The wine is produced using a high percentage of whole clusters, giving rise to a complex profile that includes black cherry, smoked meat and olive tapenade. The finish is structured, revealing notable minerality and chewiness.

Bright red-ruby color. Slightly darker and more brooding on the nose than the Cailloux Vineyard Syrah but with very pure, youthful scents of black raspberry, smoked meat, black olive tapenade, black pepper, minerals and violet; more Brune than Blonde. Dense, juicy, savory and light on its feet, with subtle sweetness leavened by surprising acidity and dark flavors of boysenberry and violet. Notes of minerals, spices and pepper add to the wine's mid-palate energy. The very long, palate-staining finish leaves the taste buds quivering. Today I prefer this to the Cailloux for its balance and light touch. Although slightly imploded, it's already easy to taste. A great vintage for this Syrah bottling.Stephen Tanzer1st December 2020

Biodynamic Wines from Walla Walla

Cayuse was founded in the late 1990s when Frenchman Chirstophe Baron established new plantings in the Pacific Northwest, specifically around Walla Walla in Oregon. A true visionary, Baron turned a rocky patch of farmland into some of America's most prized vineyards. Made with passion with a focus on using biodynamic principles, the wines are full, dense, characterful and food friendly.

The wines are only available directly from the winery via a mailing list that reached capacity many years ago. Quirkiness is part of Cayuse's identity - which is characterised by a combination of striking labels and bizarre wine names - another glass of Bionic Frog Syrah anyone?
