Castellare I Sodi Di San Niccolo 1985 is a full-bodied Sangiovese-based red wine from the Chianti Classico region of Tuscany. Castellare di Castellina has rocketed to global recognition with this flagship Supertuscan. Typically it is a blend of 85% Sangiovese and 15% Malvasia Nera that is aged in 50% new barriques for up to 30 months and a further 12 months in bottle. Producer note. "Intense red with hints of garnet. Deeply sophisticated and showcasing its full pedigree in terms of both the bouquet and palate of the wine. The fruit quality is exceptional and each individual aroma can be distinguished with total clarity, from the cherry to the spices, whose focus and integration are exceptional."

The 1985 I Sodi di San Niccolo is very typical of the year. A burst of dark red fruit totally saturates the palate. The aromas and flavors are a touch developed but there is more than enough muscle to allow the wine to continue to drink well for a number of years. This is a fairly immediate Sodi that captures the essence of the 1985 vintage in Tuscany. Tar, smoke, scorched earth, licorice, mint and sweet spices wrap around the generous, sensual finish. - Antonio Galloni

Tradition and Innovation

One of Tuscany's most venerable estates, the Biondi Santi family have been producing wines from the Greppo vineyards since the 1800s. Still family owned and now managed by Franco Biondi Santi and his children, the winery produces three wines - a straight Brunello di Montalcino, a Riserva and Sassoalloro, IGT Toscana - both using 100% Sangiovese.

The vineyard team manage around twenty five hectares of vines and the focus is very much on traditional techniques and preserving the fresh character of the fruit. This means early harvests, long macerations and mostly stainless steel or inactive oak for ageing although the Riserva sees some more active oak initially before being racked into larger casks.
