Casa Lapostolle Clos Apalta 2002 is a red blend from the Colchagua Valley, Chile, crafted primarily from Merlot, Carmenère and Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine originates from a celebrated single vineyard. The vintage experienced challenging weather conditions, requiring precise viticultural practices, which led to a limited production of approximately 3,000 cases. Casa Lapostolle, co-founded by Laurent and Alexandra Golfier, emphasises organic farming and minimal intervention in the cellar. The vineyard`s clay and limestone soils contribute to the wine’s structure, while the cooler climate enhances its complexity and depth over time.

The Clos Apalta luxury cuvee, primarily based on an old vine, non-irrigated Carmenere parcel, remains one of Chile’s standard-bearers. Displaying aromas of sweet, spicy cassis, the 2002 Clos Apalta is a concentrated, medium to full-bodied wine with intense black cherry, black currant liqueur, spice, and pepper flavors. This serious, focused, well-structured effort is jam-packed with fruit, and reveals a lengthy, tannin-studded finish. It should be drunk over the next 7-8 years.

Deep ruby. Oak-spicy aromas of clove, nutmeg, cocoa powder, espresso and raspberry preserves. The intense spice character carries through in the mouth, where there's a sweet red berry tone and lush, silky texture. This clearly has great material and is plenty sweet but it's a shame that the wood is so dominant.Josh Raynolds1st March 2006
