The Casa Lapostolle Clos Apalta 2001 is a premium Bordeaux blend from the Apalta Valley in Chile’s Colchagua Valley. The blend for this vintage is predominantly Merlot and Carmenère, with a proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon, sourced from Casa Lapostolle`s historic Apalta vineyard, which features ungrafted vines planted as early as 1915. The 2001 growing season was notably dry and warm, contributing to low yields and wines of exceptional concentration. The wine was aged for 22 months in new French oak barrels. It presents a full-bodied character with firm, structured tannins that integrate with an opulent texture, offering complex notes of dark berries, spice, cocoa and an earthy minerality that reflects its unique Apalta terroir.

80% Merlot-Carmenère, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. Very deep purple. Quite leafy nose with some pepper. Really thick yet lively. Very sweet start but excellent tannic structure too. Some Earl Grey tea character. Full and yet there is lift and life. Very sweet start and still quite dry on the finish. A wine to keep. (JR)
