Second wine of Château Lafite Rothschild, Carruades de Lafite has characteristics close to the Grand Vin with its own personality linked to a higher proportion of Merlot and specific plots intended for the production of Carruades. The 2019 is composed of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc and offers up a nose that is ripe and fresh at the same time, with notes of blackcurrant and black fruits. This is a rich Carruades with fine, precise tannins and great aging potential.

The 2019 Carruades de Lafite has more red fruit on the nose, tertiary scents and touches of tobacco, harmonious. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, moderate depth, not complex and in fact, just a little monotone on the finish. Maybe this is entering a dumb phase? Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting. Neal Martin1st February 2023

An Iconic First Growth

A highly-coveted First Growth from Pauillac, the estate boasts a fascinating history that can be traced back as far as 1234. Spanning 110 hectares, Château Lafite Rothschild produces a legendary first wine, Lafite Rothschild, showcasing beautiful aromatics and an extraordinary capacity to age; a superb second wine, Carruades de Lafite, and Légende de Pauillac.

Located at the northerly boundary of Pauillac, adjacent to Saint-Estèphe, the Château vineyards are broadly split into two parcels - one which supplies the bulk of the grapes for the Grand Vin and a second parcel that is used to produce Carruades de Lafite. Vineyard plantings are around 70% Cabernet Sauvignon 25% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot.
