Le Carillon d`Angélus is the second label of the prestigious Château Angélus, first made in the 1987 vintage. This release is from the 2020 vintage, made from a blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. On the nose, expect notes of wild red berries, cherries, some pepper and spices. The palate is rich and seductive, with a powerful core of ripe fruit. Best enjoyed from 2023 onwards.
92 Robert Parker
Aromas of sweet cherries, berries, mint and rose petals, framed by a deft touch of new oak, introduce the 2020 Le Carillon d'Angélus, a medium to full-bodied, supple and seamless wine that's velvety and enveloping, with a suave, polished profile that will lend it a broad drinking window. Produced in a new, dedicated winery, where tanks are adapted to the size of parcels, it was matured in 45% new barriques, 30% used barrels and the rest in tank, making for a somewhat more controlled oak influence. — William Kelley, 6th April 2023
92 Jane Anson
Expect a change from recent years for Carillon, with far less Cabernet Franc in the blend, to really give it a distinct character from Angélus. Structured and creamy, gourmet and confident studded with espresso, bitter orange zest and cocoa, together with pretty serious acidity. Winemaker Emmanuelle Fulchi d’Aligny (her last full vintage here) and Benjamin La Foret, second vintage in the new cellars. 40hl/ha yield, 3.5ph, 60% new oak. — Jane Anson, 15th February 2023
92 The Wine Independent
A blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, the 2020 Carillon d’Angelus is deep garnet-purple in color. Notes of Morello cherries, juicy blackberries, and raspberry leaves spring from the glass, followed by touches of lilacs, cedar chest, and sandalwood, with a waft of cumin seed. The medium to full-bodied palate is chock-full of bright, expressive blackberry and spicy layers, supported by nice, ripe, plush tannins and finishing with a refreshing lift. — Lisa Perrotti-Brown, 12th March 2023
89 Vinous
The 2020 Le Carillon d’Angélus has a compact, tight bouquet that needs more coaxing than I anticipated, almost reluctantly offering brambly black fruit, blueberry, incense and light potpourri scents. The palate is well balanced with a lovely bead of acidity that slices through the pure blackberry and raspberry fruit. I cannot recall a Carillon as precise as this, particularly on the finish. Just a superb Deuxième Vin. - Neil Martin - The 2020 Le Carillon d'Angélus has an impressive nose: well defined, more mineralité than its peers, lively black fruit and neatly integrated oak. The palate is medium-bodied with a fleshy opening, a bit Bretty perhaps. It's actually a bit of a comedown after the aromatics and just feels a bit more forward than I would like. This doesn't show nearly as well as it did out of barrel. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.
16 Jancis Robinson
Tasted blind. Deep crimson. Fragrant, spicy dark fruit. Smooth tannins and plenty of freshness. Approachable, straightforward and balanced. Fine tannic freshness on the finish. Fine, understated, long. (JH) — Julia Harding, 24th January 2024
