Château Capbern 2015 is a sophisticated Saint-Estèphe red wine from the owners of the esteemed Third Growth, Château Calon-Ségur. This vintage, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, represents a significant step up in quality for the estate, offering a profile of bright blue and red berries. The palate is medium-bodied with polished tannins and a generous, uncomplicated fruit character that reflects the warmth of the 2015 season. It provides excellent value for money, delivering a classic Médoc experience with a smooth, sophisticated finish and a touch of black pepper.

The 2015 Capbern has a thoroughly enjoyable, finely delineated and focused nose, with a mixture of red and black fruit, cedar and light sandalwood scents. The palate is medium-bodied and very sapid, with crisp tannins, decent length and impressive weight on the finish. It's a bit uncompromising but this should repay cellaring and deserves a higher score than I gave it before. Tasted blind at the 2015 Bordeaux Ten-Year-On tasting at Farr Vintners. Blended of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot, the 2015 Capbern spent 18 months aging in barrels, 60% of which were new. Deep garnet-purple in color, it has a meaty/gamey nose over a core of baked blackberries and cassis with an undercurrent of dried thyme. The medium-bodied mouth is firm, grainy and a little lean.

Tasted blind. Very dark crimson. Focused, quite intense nose. Lovely rich fruit on the front palate. Then quite a mass of tannin but well covered by the glorious fruit. Not that much made. VGVen primeur. (JR)
