Cantenac Brown is a distinguished wine estate located in the Margaux appellation in the Bordeaux region of France. Classified as a Third Growth in the 1855 Classification of Bordeaux wines, the estate covers around 48 hectares and is planted with predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon, followed by Merlot and a small percentage of Cabernet Franc. Cantenac Brown wines are known for their elegance, finesse, and aromatic complexity. Their Grand Vin typically exhibits notes of blackcurrant, blackberry, and plum, along with hints of cedar, tobacco, and spice. Cantenac Brown 2020 is still quite young, and it would benefit from some cellaring.

Cloves, garrigue, incense, sandalwood, powerful and intense, with aromatics of crushed rose petals, enveloping and totally delicious. Real density to the tannins, alongside cassis and blackberry fruits. This clearly has more depth and warmth than in the 2019, but both are balanced with appellation signature. First vintage with Tristan Le Lous as owner. 60% new oak barrels, harvest September 10 to 30, José Sanfins director, Eric Boissenot consultant.Jane Anson9th July 2025

The 2020 Cantenac Brown has a more reductive nose than its peers—the aromatics are not coming out to play on this occasion. But in the glass, it does have real complexity. The palate is medium-bodied, though not quite as precise as its peers, with a little chewiness toward the finish. This does not engage as much as some of the other Margaux at the moment. It's a bit distant, though I am sure it will blossom with bottle age. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.Neal Martin12th November 2024
