Canon 1990, a red wine from the esteemed Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé in Bordeaux, showcases a Merlot-dominant blend with 13.5% alcohol derived from a notably warm vintage. The vineyard, renowned for its clay and limestone soils, benefited from ideal ripening conditions, allowing the grapes to achieve a robust, opulent character. This vintage exhibits a complex profile of black cherries, liquorice, and dried herbs, evolving over time to reveal layers of forest floor and truffle. The plush texture reflects the traditional winemaking style of Château Canon, established in the 18th century, which prioritises elegance and longevity in its wines.

Served blind. Dark, subtle, blackish garnet. Rather an odd nose that`s somehow a bit buttery. Then dry, not to say a bit severe, on the finish. Definitely not as much pleasure as the Église-Clinet 1990. When we still thought the latter was a southern Rhône, we wondered whether this might be from the northern Rhône. (JR)
Vinous
This traditionally vinified St. Émilion was brilliant out of barrel, showing richness with restraint and lovely, precise plummy fruit. Two samples of the finished wine, however, were marred by a faint musty aroma that leaves us in doubt about the future of this wine. Still has very good texture and structure, and is very fresh and youthful, but bottles that have come our way to date are impossible to assess. Stephen Tanzer1st November 1993
