Château Calon-Ségur is the most northerly of the Médoc Grand-Crus Classés and is renowned for wines with excellent depth of fruit and superb length. 2005 is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot offering scents of cassis, earth, woodsmoke and spice. It is broad-shouldered and broodingly tannic suggesting more time in bottle may be of benefit.

Deep, bright ruby-red. Deeply pitched aromas of black raspberry, black cherry, leather, smoked meat, earth and menthol. Chewy, brooding and deep, with concentrated black cherry, menthol, mineral and leather flavors framed by a powerful spine of acids and tannins. Really saturates the palate on the tannic back end. I'd give this classic St. Estephe a decade of aging, at which time this wine may well merit an even higher score.

Solid, dense, for the moment a bit obdurate. Strange sandpaper nose. Big and bold and zappy though pretty strict and slightly mentholated on the palate. Firm aand chunky – much less sophisticated than Montrose and less intense than Cos. Big, bold, direct. A little less concentrated on the front palate than I was expecting though it certainly glows with life and should never disappoint. A little bit of sweetness. A little bit rustic. Falls away a little on the finish. Needs a lot of time. Very very solid. (JR)

Château Calon-Ségur is the most northerly of the Médoc Grand-Crus Classés and is renowned for wines with excellent depth of fruit and great longevity. One of the stars of the Saint-Estèphe appellation, Calon-Ségur was categorised as a third growth in the famous 1855 classification of Bordeaux châteaux.
The estate produces two beautiful reds: the celebrated first wine in addition to a second, known as Marquis de Calon. The estate’s key varieties include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, which are used to make superb, consistently excellent Bordeaux that rewards long-term ageing.
