Château Calon-Ségur is one of the shining stars of the Saint-Estèphe appellation, owned by the French insurance company Suravenir since 2012. The wine produced here was classified as one of fourteen Third Growths in the historic Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855. Over 40 years old now, the 1982 vintage remains a rich and full-bodied wine, boasting notes of sweet blackcurrants, earthy undergrowth and pencil shavings.

Vinous
The 1982 Calon Ségur, en magnum, has a straightforward yet fragrant nose with brambly red fruit, incense and hints of sandalwood. This is open and generous yet missing the finesse of some top-ranking 1982s. It certainly feels fully mature. The palate is medium-bodied with a granular texture, a little harshness deriving from coarser tannins compared to say, the 1982 Cos d'Estournel. Fine acidity and plenty of graphite-tinged black fruit with a slight harshness towards the finish. Not bad, but nor is it top of the class. Tasted at the 1982 Dinner at Hatched.
