Château Calon-Ségur is the most northerly of all the Médoc Grand-Crus Classés, located just to the north of the village of St-Estèphe. The estate`s 74-hectare vineyard is planted to Cabernet Sauvignon 65%, Merlot 20% and Cabernet Franc 15%. The 1961 vintage has a mature bouquet, with cedarwood, tobacco, coffee beans and forest floor aromas. The palate is rich and complex, with grippy tannins. Fully evolved but still fresh, it has a generous mouthfeel and long finish.

The 1961 Calon-Ségur has never really been the greatest Saint Estèphe and I have tended to prefer the 1959. Showing some bricking on the rim, it has a mature and rather bucolic bouquet, light cedar and forest floor aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with firm; grippy tannin, although you wish there was more fruit. It feels quite advanced towards the finish with a long mushroomy aftertaste. Bottles in larger formats and perfect provenance might be interesting but bottles should be consumed in the near future. Tasted at an off-line dinner in London.Neal Martin1st October 2019

A Saint-Estèphe Superstar

Château Calon-Ségur is the most northerly of the Médoc Grand-Crus Classés and is renowned for wines with excellent depth of fruit and great longevity. One of the stars of the Saint-Estèphe appellation, Calon-Ségur was categorised as a third growth in the famous 1855 classification of Bordeaux châteaux.

The estate produces two beautiful reds: the celebrated first wine in addition to a second, known as Marquis de Calon. The estate’s key varieties include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, which are used to make superb, consistently excellent Bordeaux that rewards long-term ageing.
